Our main reference here is Adventure Handbook, 3rd ed, by Drew Knowles.  
New Mexico and Arizona have an extraordinary number of national monuments, national
parks, national historical sites and so forth that are not very far off Route 66.
We have a number of interesting
landscapes and panoramas from the
following areas:

Petroglyph National Monument--sunsets
and night pictures from the volcanoes on
the monument.  The road to the monument
branches off Route 66 where Route 66
(Central Avenue west of Albuquerque)
crosses I-40

El Morro waterhole
This is the water hole at El Morro National
Monument.  Just to the right begins inscription
rock that has very old Indian petroglyphs,
signatures of early Spanish explorers from the
1500's and on up to US Army survey teams.
Great Kiva at Casa Rinconada
This is the Great Kiva at Casa
Rinconada, Chaco Culture National
Historical Park, commonly referred to
as Chaco Canyon
Chetro Ketl at Chaco Canyon
Chetro Ketl, one of the dozen or so
large structures at Chaco Canyon.  
Pueblo Bonito is the best known of
these structures.
